Anyone telling you something different is either selling you something, about to sell you something or is looking to use their own experiences as a mirror for your abilities.

Just write. Read other people's writing. You'll figure out the rest. You'll meet great people who really want to help you and more importantly, you'll enjoy writing.

Also, check out Stephen King's book, "On Writing". It's simple, great and extremely down-to-earth.
